1. The Bamboo Toothbrush
Did you know that every plastic toothbrush ever made still exists somewhere on this planet?
Yikes! Bamboo handles are naturally antimicrobial and biodegrade within a few years when composted, and switching to a bamboo toothbrush is one of the easiest wins. It feels natural in your hand, looks chic in your bathroom, and when you’re done, you can literally compost the handle. It’s just a tiny change that keeps billions of plastic sticks out of our oceans.
2. Shampoo & Conditioner Bars
This is one of the best switches you can make. Most liquid shampoos and conditioners available at the market are just mostly water, which has been thickened and packed in a plastic bottle which probably lasts for a month and a half or so, but that’s not the case with shampoo and conditioner bars. Shampoo and conditioner bars mostly come with sustainable packing and they last much longer, sometimes even more than 2 months. They’re a total lifesaver with no problem of leakage and are very travel-friendly.
3. Beeswax (or Vegan) Wraps
Plastic wrap is notoriously difficult to reuse and recycle, making beeswax wraps the perfect, sustainable alternative. Made from cotton infused with beeswax, jojoba oil, and resin, these wraps are self-adhesive, food-safe, and washable. They keep food fresh, smell amazing (how lovely is that?), and can be composted at the end of their life (usually about a year).
4. Reusable Coffee Cups
If you are grabbing a coffee on the go, your daily paper cup is likely lined with plastic, making it hard to recycle. We love a good caffeine fix, but the paper cup fix for plastic just isn’t right! Bringing your own reusable cup isn’t just better for the Earth; it is better for you too!! Now, don’t you think it is just for coffees? You can use it for juices too, but how, if you may ask? 5. Swedish Dishcloths
If you find yourself going through rolls of paper towels like they’re going out of style, you’re going to love Swedish dishcloths. One of these little wonders can replace up to 17 rolls of paper towels! They’re super absorbent, they don’t get that “old sponge” smell, and when they finally wear out, you can toss them in the compost. Again, super pocket-friendly and a better option for our environment.
6. Stainless Steel or Glass Straws
With plastic straw bans becoming common, this is an easy switch. Buying a durable stainless steel or glass straw means you never have to ask for plastic again. Keep one in your bag, use it at restaurants, or keep it at home for smoothies. They are easy to clean (many come with a tiny brush) and look sleek.
7. Loose Leaf Tea & Infusers
Did you know many tea bags actually contain microplastics?
Worry not! To keep your tea (and your body) plastic-free, try loose-leaf tea with a stainless steel infuser. Not only is it better for the environment, but the quality of the tea is usually much higher. It’s a simple ritual that makes your afternoon break feel a little more special.
8. Reusable Cotton Rounds
Your nightly skincare routine just got an upgrade! Instead of tossing a disposable cotton pad every night, switch to washable cloth rounds. They’re softer on your skin, and you can just pop them in a mesh bag and throw them in the laundry with your towels. A very simple, soft, and sustainable switch just slid into your routine.
9. Laundry Detergent Sheets
Those giant plastic laundry jugs are heavy, messy, and mostly water. Laundry sheets are a total game-changer. They look like little strips of paper, and they take up almost zero space in your cupboard, dissolving completely in the wash, making them a super travel-friendly option. Most available are mildly fragrant, which are not much overpowering.
